Augustin in Big State and The Value
Jesus, Arnold, you are becoming famous! Not for good reasons, of course...
Arnold, you're totally discredited, and this is now irreversible. Dilma should sack you.
You proved, in your interview, you know some accounting.
Like a good left-wing, you cant lose an opportunity of FHC-bashing, right?. It borders the comic, Arnold.
Interview:
X: Arnold, should the Treasury refrain from capitalizing BNDE issuing debt, would its credit operations be affected?
Arnold: Yes.
X: Then you are indeed creating money, son.
Arnold: we could have retained the dividends in this case
X: Yes, but then the fiscal primary surplus you are announcing wouldnt materialize. Correct?
Arnold: FHC also capitalized BNDE...
FHC appears suddenly, brought to the scene by Palas Atenas
FHC: Arnold, you are a neo-bobo. Look at the size of BNDE balance sheet during my administration and compare to Dilma's.
X: Arnold, the Treasury does create money capitalizing BNDE in exchange for spurious fiscal primary accounting benefits. If BNDE retained dividends to grant more credit from its own capital base, government's fiscal surplus would be lower
FHC: Arnold, go back to Econ 101. Begin with Varian, and then go on to MGW. The other Arnold knows more economics than you!
FHC suddenly disappears, carried away by Febo Apolo
Arnold: We have to reelect Dilma !
X: That's not feasible anymore, son.

conversa com dono de escolinha
....bla, bla...bla....
cesg: ah, sim, então você me daria um desconto? eu tenho 5 filhos pra criar...

The X group
People are asking me in the streets if I have anything to do with Batista's "X" group.
The answer of course is no. It is just a coincidence.
Batista is putting me in dire straits in the stock exchange, actually (he and dilma)
Companies come and go; succeed and fail taking risks, and this makes for a healthy economy.
But taking risks with the taxpayer money and face limited liability on the top of it is another story altogether. CEF and BNDE are the most important lenders to Batista's X group. And they do it with our money, at subsidized rates. Now, if one can harness other people's money without asking them and at very low rates, one may well go for a highly risky bet and hope it pays off. If it doesnt, it was not one's money to begin with.
The kings did that in the past. It was a bit more brutal, but certainly less murky.

Can an Unicamper learn economics?
They are at least creative people. Today's piece in The Value has a nice title: "Austericidio Fiscal"
An Unicamper always begins by saying that the high interest rates and appreciated currency from the last decade fucked up the brazilian economy. I am not sure if they are aware of this, but the BRL has floated freely in the last decade. Are they sad that people were lifted out of poverty because of commodities and not industrial prowess?
Were real interest rates too high? Let me ask the Unicampers this: was the inflation rate too low in the last decade? No. Oh, but then in what sense was the Selic too high?
To their main point since I am short of time and angry today: they argue austerity now would hurt the economy. Unicampers, do you know what is the current inflation rate in Brazil? Do you know that expansionary fiscal policy coupled with a tightening monetary policy lead to undesirably high interest rates, or you dont study IS/LM at Unicamp?
Oh, yes, I want more public investment too. But do you know this has to be financed out of distortionary taxation that adversely affects private investment? Advocate smaller government consumption and greater public investment ! Or at Unicamp you are not taught what a budget constraint is? I would love to live in a constraint-free world too...
You probably think we lack aggregate demand, right? This is the magic trick: lack of demand! Take a look at the external accounts, boys, before ever saying that again, ok?
Was my title creative too?

Dilminha 30%
